Harvest Moon Meaning and Totems in Sun Bear's Medicine Wheel: The Moon of the Brown Bear (August 23 - September 22)

The last moon of Shawnodese, keeper of the South, the Harvest Moon arrives every year between August 23 and September 22. Amethyst, Violet, and Brown Bear all teach the same discernment here: fair judgment. But when the moment comes to decide, how do you know if you've observed enough, or if you're already judging with what you have?

Illustration, flat stylized forms. A woman seen from behind, curly blonde hair, stands at a crossroads. On one path, the silhouette of a brown bear. On the other, a glowing wild violet flower. Radiating energy lines flow down from a large violet-purple moon above her, branching toward both paths. Deep purple, amethyst, and amber palette.
The Moon That Guides the Right Choice

Am I Still Monsieur Seguin's Goat?

As a child, my mother used to tell me I was Monsieur Seguin's goat. Always needing to see if the grass was greener elsewhere.

Growing up, I thought I'd outgrown that. Then a training program appeared. Fifteen days of wild plant foraging, in late September. And that old question came right back.

My land has been speaking to me for a long time. I've always welcomed it as a guide, one that leads me somewhere I wouldn't have imagined on my own. Today, it seems to be pushing me toward an agricultural activity.

But my true calling isn't foraging. It's perfume. Healing through scent, like the perfumers I met in Peru. Foraging is only a door toward that, not the thing itself.

The schedule stops me first. Fifteen days that would upend an already tight calendar. And then that familiar little voice: what if there's a better training somewhere else? The goat looking over the fence, again.

My training fund isn't unlimited. I can't try one, then start over with another. I have to decide, once, with fairness.

The Question This Moon Asks

Last month, the in the article on the Moon of Ripe Berries asked a question of discernment: does what is ripe in me still deserve protection, or only picking?

The Harvest Moon asks a different question. Not one of protection, but of judgment.

With what I have, with what I know today, what is the right choice?

Not the perfect choice. Not the risk-free choice. The right choice, the one you can make with the real means you have, without waiting to know more.

That's the question I'm asking you too, in this moon. What decision are you putting off deciding, secretly hoping for more information, more certainty, when what you already have might be enough to judge fairly?

What Is the Harvest Moon in the Medicine Wheel?

In Sun Bear's Medicine Wheel, the Harvest Moon closes the house of the South, from August 23 to September 22. Its stone sits three-quarters of the way between South and West.

It's the last step. Before leaving the innocence of the South. Before entering the maturity of the West.

This moon teaches discernment, fairness, common sense, perseverance. Here, we finally learn what work and duty truly mean.

The Totems of the Harvest Moon

Animal — Brown Bear Mineral — Amethyst Plant — Violet Color — Violet-purple

Amethyst teaches good judgment and justice. It softens, pacifies, protects. It helps understand the root of anger, so you can begin to release it.

Violet teaches the ability to enter the secret regions of the heart and soul. Calm, reserved, it still opens the way to the fullness of feeling when you sit close to it.

Violet-purple is the shy shade easily missed in the undergrowth. The color of ceremonies, rituals, spiritual intuitions. It inspires. But it also warns: spiritual power can serve humanity, or serve one man alone.

The Brown Bear

It doesn't move fast. It looks first.

It enters a cave, under a fallen tree, sometimes under a waterfall, and makes that shelter its home without ever rushing to choose another.

It's sometimes born in the same litter as a black bear cub. Same mother, two coats. Nothing to decide between them, one is no more right than the other.

Perhaps that's why the elders made it chief of the animal council, alongside Mudjekeewis, keeper of the West. Not for its speed. For its justice. Its quiet strength. Its courage to decide without rushing.

It only hurries once a year. In autumn, when it must gather enough to cross the winter. The rest of the time, it observes, it tastes, it learns what surrounds it before deciding anything at all.

At its place on the wheel, the trap waits: judging too fast, growing hard, growing tired of others. Its gift is the opposite: knowing how to wait until you've truly seen, before judging.

The Tools of This Moon for Deciding

This moon doesn't only give a question. It also gives tools, through its totems.

Amethyst calms before judgment. It clears what clouds judgment, anger, fear, urgency. Before deciding, you can hold an amethyst, or simply sit in silence for a few minutes. A calm mind judges more fairly than a rushed one.

Violet invites you to listen to the heart, not only the head. A right choice isn't always the most reasonable one on paper. Ask yourself: what does my heart already know, that my head hasn't accepted yet?

Brown Bear teaches patient observation, then action at the right moment. It doesn't decide on the first impulse. But it doesn't stay in front of its den forever either. It observes, then it chooses. Give yourself a real time limit to observe, and a real moment to decide.

Violet-purple, the color of ceremonies, invites you to ask the question in a sacred space. A prayer, a moment of silence, a simple ritual, so the decision doesn't come from the mind alone, but from something larger.

What do I already know, with certainty? What am I still waiting to know, when I may never know it before choosing?

It isn't the one who knows everything who judges fairly.

It's the one who dares to choose with what they already know.
